Grades K – 2

K/1   The focus of the curriculum for this grade is the cycle of Jewish holidays. Students will explore : Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Simchat Torah, Chanukah, Tu B’Shevat, Purim, Passover and Shavuot. Each of these occurs naturally during the course of the school year. In addition, the State of Israel is introduced as both a historically significant place in our Jewish history as well as a thriving modern culture.Hebrew instruction is introduced in oral/aural fashion with attention being paid to the initial phonetic recognition.. Using the Sarah and David series for Hebrew, the children are guided along by story and song through an easy to remember program. However formal Hebrew instruction does not begin until Third grade.The school service that this grade is involved with is the Consecration service which is held during the Simchat Torah Service.

Grade 2   The focus of the curriculum in this grade is Shabbat. Each student is encouraged to bring home the “Shabbat Box” to create their own family Shabbat experience. The students are exposed to the many ways Shabbat can be experienced. The service for this class is a Friday night family service which is a great entrée for them onto the Bimah. Hebrew instruction for this grade includes a formal introduction to the letters and vowels of the Hebrew Aleph-Bet.
